Camel ride in Marrakech: what to know before you go

You can ride a camel in the Palmeraie, the Marrakech palm grove. Our camel ride there lasts 1.5 hours and costs 8.9 €, and you pay on the day, in cash. It's a slow, calm ride, good for photos and for a break from the busy medina.
Palmeraie, Agafay or the Sahara?
Marrakech is not in the desert, so camel rides from the city happen in one of three places:
- The Palmeraie, the Marrakech palm grove: our camel ride there lasts 1.5 hours.
- Agafay: a stony desert outside the city.
- The Sahara: real sand dunes, but very far from Marrakech.
If you only have a few hours, the Palmeraie is the practical choice.
How do you get on a camel?
The camel kneels so you can climb into the saddle. When it stands up, and again when it kneels to let you off, you tip for a moment. Lean back and hold on to the saddle until the camel is level again. It only feels strange for a few seconds.
What to wear for a camel ride
- Long trousers. You sit with your legs apart, so skirts and short dresses are uncomfortable.
- Closed shoes or trainers.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen, plus a hat in summer. We give you a scarf for the sun and dust.
- A warm layer in winter.
Is a camel ride in Marrakech worth it?
It depends on what you want. On a camel you sit high up and move slowly, so you have time to look around and take photos. If you want speed, choose the quad. If you want both, the quad and camel combo costs 19.9 €.
How to choose a camel ride with healthy animals
Wherever you ride, look at the camels before you get on. They should look calm and well fed, with shade and water nearby. You can also ask how many hours a day the camels work. A good operator is happy to answer.
